In April 1909, the Arizona Gazette ran a front-page story: an explorer named G.E. Kincaid had found a massive, ancient underground city carved into the Grand Canyon, complete with Egyptian-style idols, hieroglyphs, and mummies. The Smithsonian allegedly sent a team to excavate, and then the story vanished completely from the public record. Restricted zones, Hopi legends of the Sipapu, and the documented history of the canyon still sit beside that vanished report. The hole is whether this is the greatest suppressed archaeological discovery in American history, or a masterpiece of early 20th-century yellow journalism.
